  • There are over 3,000 species of mosquitoes worldwide! About 130 species reside in North America, 60 have been identified in Michigan and Saginaw County possesses approximately 20 common species of mosquitoes.

  • Male mosquitoes tend to hatch sooner than female mosquitoes and have a shorter life span. Males generally live only a few weeks while females live approximately 4-8 weeks.

  • Heartworm is fairly common in Saginaw County and is transmitted by mosquitoes. This disease can cause significant damage to the heart, lungs, and other vital organs of dogs. It is crucial that your dog visits the veterinarian each year to obtain preventive medicine. Though dogs are the primary host for heartworm; cats, as well as other mammals, can also get heartworm. However, it affects cats in different ways than dogs. You should have your veterinarian test your cat for heartworm as well as your dog.

  • Mosquitoes are most active just before sunset until sunrise, yet some species remain active and bite all day long.

  • Mosquitoes actually insert their saliva into your skin to prevent blood clotting before they take your blood. This substance, an enzyme call apyrase, is what makes your skin bump up and itch.

  • Mosquitoes are attracted to humans for a number of reasons. We exhale carbon dioxide which is an attractant for biting insects. Other substances on our skin may also be attractive to mosquitoes such as certain soaps, lotions, perfumes, and hair care products. Mosquitoes are also attracted to heat and moisture.

  • Only the female mosquito takes blood. She uses the protein from blood as an ingredient to develop her eggs.

  • A mosquito only weighs 1/25,000 of an ounce.

  • Bug zappers are not an effective way of controlling mosquitoes. These devices kill a greater amount of beneficial insects than mosquitoes. Zappers may actually attract insects into your yard. (Emphasis added by

  • Light colored clothes are less attractive to mosquitoes than dark colored clothing. Loose fitting clothes make it more difficult for them to bite you.

  • If they are holding water; tires, birdbaths, flower pots, rain barrels, children’s toys, abandoned pools, tarps, and boats can all breed mosquitoes. It is important to empty these items every 5-7 days during the mosquito season.
